Ethan Nwaneri’s standout performance has sparked comparisons to Lionel Messi.

As the 17-year-old continues to showcase his great talent in Arsenal’s victory over Leicester. When Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, Nwaneri has stepped up on the right side of Arsenal’s attack, making the most of his breakthrough season. So far, he has netted seven goals in 24 appearances across all competitions.
Starting in Arsenal’s first match following Kai Havertz’s season-ending injury, Nwaneri emerged as the team’s most creative force. He came close to scoring twice in the second half, clipping the crossbar and hitting the post, before delivering a superb cross for Mikel Merino to break the deadlock. His game-changing display caught the attention of former England forward Joe Cole, who, while commentating for TNT Sport, drew parallels between Nwaneri and Messi.
“Those little touches in and around the box—I don’t even want to say it, but it’s like Lionel Messi,” Cole remarked. “I don’t want to add more pressure, but the way he uses the back foot to lure defenders, then shifts with a toe touch to unbalance them, is exceptional. He plays with such confidence; he’s a beautiful player to watch.”
